![]() In the game, it also went by the names of the Blue Flu, and Limit 115. The New Plague was meant to play a much larger role in the story of Van Buren, the canceled second iteration of Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios. The following is based on Van Buren design documents and is not canon. Control of the West Tek Research Facility was handed over to the military in 2071. West-Tek was ultimately unable to develop a cure, despite their close ties to the federal government and their work in viral research through the Pan-Immunity Virion, and subsequent FEV, projects. The government further used New Plague to register civilians, claiming a symptom of the plague was "socialist thoughts" and advocating isolation: people should stay indoors, read books, and avoid "ice cream socials." Citizens were told that if they believed they were infected, they were to contact a disease control center, such as the disaster relief outpost in Point Lookout. The government used the paranoia surrounding the virus to discourage assemblies, fuel anti-communist sentiment, and encourage informing government forces of suspected subversive elements. In 2055, West Tek started to develop a cure for the plague, establishing the West Tek Research Facility. The New Plague was so widespread that a national quarantine was mandated in 2053. The worst symptoms included profuse sweating, unexplained contusions and swelling, and eventually terminating in massive external hemorrhaging. The usual methods of controlling the spread of the disease were isolation and containment. The huge blowholes on the shoulders of the Grafton Monster are its weakest point. The New Plague was a highly virulent contagion that was easily spread from person to person. Also, it will launch projectiles (a black liquid) or throw giant rocks similar to super mutant behemoths. It can stun the player character for a few seconds. ![]() It was once human before it was horribly mutated by an experimental FEV strain.Ī creature that can be quick for its size, it will use its arms as well as its legs to hurl itself towards a target. Its head is non-distinct, seemingly tucked beneath the bulk of its shoulder muscles, which makes it rather difficult to make successful headshots on the creature. ![]() The Grafton Monster is a gigantic, hairless gray creature with a disproportionately large upper torso and arms, stumpy legs and enormous three-fingered fists. It will generally be hostile towards nearby creatures as well as the player character. The Grafton Monster is a large, hulking monster, which limits its ability to maneuver into tight spaces. ![]() The mutations that turned it into a powerhouse have also turned its skin and led to the development of glands that can eject globs of corrosive, oily substance in a wide area around it. It stands around 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) tall and has an oversized chest. The resulting monster is headless, hairless and has a grayish color skin with a leathery texture. The mutant was sedated and transported off-site via truck, with the Great War sidetracking the convoy and allowing the monster to escape into the wild due to a nuclear detonation blinding the driver. Based on the snallygaster strain, researchers tweaked the genome, producing a giant that shattered the containment unit, but was otherwise stable (excepting the absence of a discernible head). Using the FEVS-006458 strain on October 23, 2077, scientists created a stable - if horrifying mutation. The Grafton Monster, once a cryptid associated with West Virginia, was made flesh by West Tek's experiments at their Huntersville facility.
